The airport is situated approximately 11km (7 miles) southwest from downtown Des Moines.

Concourses B and C are undergoing extensive renovations, due to be finished in April 2010. Construction of a 1,670m (5,500 ft) parallel runway is underway, with an estimated 2011 completion date.

From the north, follow I-35 southbound, and from the west, follow I-80 eastbound to (I-235); exit at Martin Luther King Parkway and proceed south until it meets with Fleur Drive. Continue on Fleur to the airport.

From the south, take I-35 northbound to Iowa-5, go east 11km (7 miles), exit at Fleur Drive and proceed north on Fleur to airport. From the east, follow I-80 westbound to US-65 south. Turn north at the Fleur exit and proceed 3km (2 miles) to the airport.

Short-, long-term and economy parking are available at the airport with ample disabled spaces available in all areas. A 24-hour shuttle bus service links the economy car parks with the terminal. A 'cellphone lot' is available for meeters and greeters.

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty operate at the airport. Desks are located in the baggage claim area.

Bus: Des Moines Metro Transit Authority (tel: (515) 283 8100; www.dmmta.com) operates local buses to and from the airport. Heart of Iowa Regional Transit Agency (tel: 1 877 686 0029; www.hirtapublictransit.com) provides transport to the surrounding areas.
Taxi: Capitol Cab Company (tel: (515) 282 8111) and Yellow Cab Company (tel: (515) 243 1111) provide taxi services from the airport.

The Des Moines Convention & Visitors Bureau (tel: (515) 286 4960; www.seedesmoines.com) has a booth in the baggage claim area.

Money and communications: There are two ATMs, one in the lower terminal, the other in the concourse. Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the terminal and concourse. A wireless card is required to use the service.
Eating and drinking: The restaurant in the terminal lobby has been remodelled to create a food court atmosphere. There is a full-service lounge serving grill items on the lower level. On the concourse level is a full-service restaurant featuring a full menu of cuisine and libations. A few more outlets are also available in the concourse.
Shopping: A shop selling gifts, traveller's convenience items, newspapers and magazines can be found on the lobby level. There is also a retail shop on the concourse level.
Luggage: For lost or found items, contact the Airport Administration office (tel: (515) 256 5100) located on the skywalk level of the main terminal building.
Other facilities: Most restrooms offer baby changing tables. The airport offers a translation service for 75-some languages and dialects.

The Business Center, open from 0500 to 2200, provides desk space, telephone service, Internet access and lounge space. It is located in the main terminal immediately opposite the ticket counters. Meeting rooms of varying sizes (up to 200 capacity) are available on the skywalk level of the main terminal (tel: (515) 256 5100).

The airport is fully accessible for disabled travellers. There are lifts, ramps and adapted toilets, and wheelchairs can be supplied if required. TDDs are located in the concourses and on the terminal lower level. The airlines serving the airport have wheelchairs available. Disabled parking is available near the lifts on all levels of the parking ramp.
