Each summer the Antwerp Docks on the banks of the River Scheldt is converted into an urban beach. Popular with the city's young trend setters, visitors can enjoy everything from a game of beach boules to live music and entertainment. And when you need to take a break from sunning yourself, head to one of the cool bars and cafes that line the beach.

Borne out of Antwerp's status as 'Cultural Capital of Europe' in 1993, the annual Summer in Antwerp is a programme of events that spans music, art and theatre. With its multidisciplinary approach and its commitment to world cultures, the festival promises an exciting range of events and performances for visitors of all ages. The entertainment takes place in unusual locations throughout the city, ranging from specially-erected tents to old abandoned warehouses in the industrial district.

Antwerp, by tradition, puts on a big show for most of December, the focus of which is an outdoor ice rink set up on the old market square, in the old town centre. A Christmas Village market is the most popular attraction, though, with many illuminated stalls selling craftware, gifts, and plenty to eat and drink. There are nativity scenes on display in many churches, and the seasonal good cheer is further boosted with numerous Christmas concerts.

All the fun of a traditional funfair, with carousels and more - but with the difference that it is indoors, so the weather doesn't get in the way.
