Crown Palace (Taj Mahal)

The Taj Mahal has been described as the most extravagant monument ever built for love. It is also India’s most emblematic and famous tourist attraction. Renowned for its tree-lined reflective pond leading up to the fabulous domed roof, few know that the Taj Mahal is, in fact, a mausoleum not a mosque. Completed in 1653, it was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. The elaborate marble designs are inlaid with semi-precious stones such as jade, crystal, turquoise and coral. Many people choose to spend at least several hours here as the changing light and shadows affect the colour and patterns of the Taj Mahal, and it is also possible to picnic in the tranquil gardens.
Air: Indira Gandhi International Airport, Agra Airport (domestic flights). Rail: Train: Agra Cantt Station. Road: Bus: Services to Indian Tourist Office bus stop. Car: NH24, then NH2 (from Delhi); NH11 (from Jaipur); NH25, then NH2 (from Lucknow).
