Home to the Swedish Royal Family since 1981, when they moved from the Kungliga Slottet (Royal Palace) in Stockholm, Drottningholm Palace is one of the most magnificent legacies of Sweden’s imperial age. King Johan III first built a palace on the site during the late 16th century; this building was destroyed, however, by fire in 1661 and work began on building a new palace in 1662. Over the years, the interior has been improved upon by successive residents and it is now renowned for its Rococo decorations. The palace was handed over to Princess Lovisa Ulrika of Prussia in 1744 on her marriage to Adolf Fredrik of Sweden. Drottningholm is surrounded by splendid Baroque gardens, including the great English Park and the French formal garden, and is home to many fine buildings such as the Chinese Pavilion, the Court Theatre and the Castle Church.
