Khajuraho Guide

The famous erotic temples of Khajuraho are one of the most popular tourist attractions in India. Built between AD950 and 1050 by the kings of the Chandela, the site originally possessed 85 temples, of which 20 are still reasonably preserved. Lost for centuries after the decline of the Chandela, the small village of Khajuraho was rediscovered in 1838 by a British army captain. The temples are best known for the erotic friezes on their walls. The name Khajuraho is derived from Khajur, the local word for the date trees which grow in abundance in the region. A son et lumière show every evening tells the story of the Chandela Kings and the history of the temples.
Air: Indira Gandhi International Airport, Khajuraho Airport (domestic flights). Rail: Train: Harpalpur or Jhansi stations. Road: Coach: Services from Satna, Harpalpur and Jhansi.
