Located on the island of Crete, Knossos is the site of the most important palace of the ancient Minoans, the earliest of the Aegean civilisations. It was home to King Minos and, as tradition has it, the Minotaur, a giant bull who inhabited the perilous Labyrinth. The Minoan civilisation spread to mainland Greece to form the Mycenaean civilisation, a precursor to the Ancient Greeks. The site was first discovered by Minos Kalokairinos in 1878 and was excavated further by Arthur Evans between 1900 and 1931. Today, Knossos offers the modern-day visitor an abundance of ancient sites, including the Palace of Knossos, the Little Palace, the Royal Villa, the House of Frescoes and the Temple Tomb.
