Arenal Volcano (Volcán Arenal)

One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Arenal can be seen for miles around. The volcano had lain dormant for over 400 years until 1968, when it erupted, forming a lava landscape around the base. Research centre Arenal Observatory Lodge provides excellent views and Arenal Volcano National Park offers trails around the slopes and views of the summit; there are also hot spring spas with views over the surrounding area. At night, the view is even more spectacular, as molten rocks and lava tumble down the slopes, creating a dramatic ‘firework’ display that is fortunately always at least five kilometres (three miles) away.
