Attraction Information
Lake Titicaca, (Lago Titicaca) Peru
At an elevation of 3810m (12,492ft), Lake Titicaca is one of the world's highest navigable lakes. It is named after the native word for 'puma of stone' and its shape bears a strong resemblance to this animal when viewed from above. Measuring 194km (121 miles) long and 65km (45 miles) wide, it has been revered in history, featuring prominently in Inca creation myths. There are daily tours to the Uros and Taquile Islands; the Uros people live on floating islands made out of reeds that grow in the lake, whilst the inhabitants of Taquile Island are renowned for maintaining ancient traditions and for their remarkable weaving skills.
