With a diverse collection embracing over two million works of art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art ranks as one of the world’s great museums. The museum houses particularly impressive collections of work by Monet, Cézanne, Vermeer and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The modern art section comprises paintings by a wide variety of artists including Modigliani, Picasso, Braque and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. As would be expected, there are also fine displays of American art, from colonial times to the present day; these include pieces of decorative art, such as ceramics and Tiffany glass. The Cloisters is a separate branch of the museum, located in Ford Tryon Park in north Manhattan overlooking the Hudson River, and is considered to be one of the greatest collections of Medieval art in the world.
