Old Québec (Vieux Québec) Guide

The only walled city north of Mexico, Québec was settled in 1608 as a fur trading post. Its fortified exterior and strategic position high above the St Lawrence River is a testament to the historical territorial tensions between France and England that culminated in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham (1759). Divided into two sections, Haute and Basse, the old town seems more like an island of old Europe, with winding cobblestone streets, 17th- and 18th-century buildings and churches, squares, parks and numerous monuments. The Château Frontenac, a Canadian landmark, is its most prominent building – built in 1893, it is now a luxury hotel with views over the St Lawrence River and Old Québec.
