Pantheon (Panteone)
Closest Hotels to Pantheon (Panteone):
Considered by many to be the best preserved of all great classical monuments, the Pantheon was dedicated in 27 BC by Agrippa, the admiral who defeated Anthony and Cleopatra, and rebuilt by Hadrian in AD 125 after it had been struck by lightning and burnt down sometime between AD 98-117. The Pantheon possesses a dome with a span of 43.2m (142ft), the largest of its kind until the Duomo in Florence was built in the 15th century. The bronze and gold décor was stripped away to be used in other Roman monuments, such as St Peter's Basilica, but the sheer size and age of the building cannot fail to impress. Inside visitors can see the tomb of the Renaissance master Raphael.
