Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf Guide

Claiming to be the most visited tourist attraction in the USA, Fisherman’s Wharf is a bustling area located on San Francisco’s waterfront. Developed solely to attract tourists, the area was once a working fishing port. Today, visitors throng the piers along Fisherman’s Wharf, to buy souvenirs, eat in bay-side restaurants and visit the numerous attractions located along Embarcadero. Pier 39, which opened in 1978, is one of 29 piers located on the waterfront, and is San Francisco’s number one attraction. It hosts daily street performances and is home to many attractions, including Turbo Ride and The Great San Francisco Adventure, and to world-famous resident sea lions, which crowd onto pontoons and bask in the midday sun. Visitors can also take sightseeing boats from Pier 39 and from neighbouring Pier 41, and enjoy fabulous views of the bay area and Alcatraz island.
Air: San Francisco International Airport. Rail: Muni: Streetcar on the F-line to Beach Street. Cable Car: Bay Street on the Powell–Mason line. Road: Bus: Public services.
