The Prado Museum, which opened to the public in 1819 to house the Royal art collection, is one of Europe’s great museums. It houses a collection of over 4000 paintings, emphasising Spanish, Flemish and Italian art from the 15th to 19th century, and including masterpieces by Titian, Bosch, Botticelli, Rembrandt and Fra Angelico. The museum also possesses a renowned collection of paintings by Francisco de Goya. The museum was originally designed by the architect Juan de Villanueva, with work starting on it in 1785.
