Regarded as Scotland’s premier garden, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. The garden, which was first opened in 1670 as a small physic (medicinal) garden near Holyrood House, was designed by two doctors, Andrew Balfour and Robert Sibbald. It was moved to its present location during the 1820s and expanded to cover an area of 31 hectares (78 acres). Today, the garden contains a unique collection of plants from around the world, housed in the world-famous Rock Garden, the Chinese Hillside and the Glasshouse Experience. Visitors can also see the Woodland Gardens & Arboretum and the Winter Garden, as well as enjoy spectacular views across the city of Edinburgh.
Air: Edinburgh Airport. Rail: Train: Waverley Station. Road: Bus: Public services. The Garden lies 1.6km (one mile) north of Edinburgh city centre, off the A902.
