The Royal Museum and the Museum of Scotland are located on the same site in Edinburgh city centre. The Royal Museum, which has 36 galleries and is well known for its impressive Main Hall, houses an international collection of artistic, archaeological, scientific and industrial exhibits, ranging from Japanese art through to natural history. The Museum of Scotland, which opened in 1998, has over 10,000 artefacts detailing the country’s history from its geological formation and earliest inhabitants up to the 20th century. Many of Scotland’s finest regional treasures are on display, including a communal drinking cup (the Bute Mazer), made after the Scots beat the English during the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. There are also fine views of Edinburgh Castle from the museum’s rooftop, which is accessible to the public.
