Attraction Information
Tyre
Often referred to in the Bible’s New Testament, Tyre was founded at the start of the third millennium BC. The city experienced a golden age during the first millennium BC under Hiram, King of Tyre, but later suffered at the hands of its jealous enemies, including the King of Babylon in the sixth century BC, and Alexander the Great in 332 BC. Tyre eventually fell under Roman rule in 64 BC and during Roman Occupation, an acqueduct, triumphal arch and hippodrome were built. The impressive 480 metre (131ft) hippodrome, which once seated up to 20,000 spectators, is one of the main attractions. Tyre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and is one of the finest examples of architecture from the ancient world.
