Established in 1872, Yellowstone National Park is the first and oldest national park in the world. Renowned for its geothermal phenomena, the park has more geysers and hot springs than the rest of the world combined. The mineral waters of Mammoth Hot Springs in the northwest of the park, have long been attracting visitors seeking a natural cure for various ailments. Other natural attractions include the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River (not to be confused with the Grand Canyon in Arizona), fossil forests and Yellowstone Lake. Natural wildlife, such as bears, wolves, elk, bison and trout, abound and can often be seen from the road. Evidence of human activity in the park, dating back as far as 12,000 years, has also been found and visitors can learn more about the area’s history at the Albright Visitor Center Museum. The Canyon Visitor Center also features displays on the culture and wildlife of Yellowstone. Visitors who wish to stay overnight in the park can take advantage of the many inns, lodges and campsites located within the park boundaries.
