Attraction Information
Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwe-Kathedraal)
The Cathedral of our Lady is the largest Gothic church in the Low Countries and rises to a height of 123m (404ft), piercing the skyline of historic Antwerp. Although construction began on the cathedral in 1352, it was not completed until 1521; the roof and Gothic furniture were then destroyed by fire in 1533. The interior of the cathedral is Baroque in style, the original Gothic features having been destroyed by religious idealists in the late 16th century. There are many fine works of art in the nave, the most famous being Ruben’s ‘Descent from the Cross’ (1611-14).
