Hotels in Berlin
After the reunification of Germany more than two decades ago, there was a chronic shortage of hotels in Berlin, which has been recently addressed with the construction of many business hotels in the once-divided centre of the city. However, non-business, cheap hotels and hotels with a bit of personality and character remain harder to find, so if you're not on business and have a limited budget, start looking early!
The Berlin hotels below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Luxury (over €200)
Moderate (€100 to €200)
Cheap (under €100)
These Berlin hotel prices are the starting prices for a standard double room and include taxes (VAT at 19%) and breakfast (usually a buffet) unless otherwise specified.
Holiday Inn Esplanade
The 4-star Holiday Inn Esplanade operates a shuttle service to Berlin Tegel Airport and offers extensive business facilities as well as a restaurant, bar, gym and swimming pool.
Mercure Airport Hotel Berlin Tegel
The Mercure Airport Hotel Berlin Tegel is the closest hotel to Berlin Tegel Airport at 1km (0.6 mile) from the terminal. The hotel offers number of large meeting rooms for conferences and business.
Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin
Hotel Adlon Kempinski is one of the great historical hotels of Berlin. Over the decades, the rich and famous have always stayed in this hotel, including Michael Jackson, who notoriously dangled his baby over one of the balconies in 2002. Located close to the Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin, the Adlon retains its luxurious feel; the restaurants, bars and banquet rooms are a wonderful reminder of its glorious past.
Hotel Seehof Berlin
Conveniently situated between the busy Kurfürstendamm and Berlin's fairground and ICC Centre, Hotel Seehof Berlin overlooks a small, picturesque lake. The hotel is traditionally decorated throughout, with wooden furnishings and high-quality appliances, offering basic business facilities, such as fax and internet. Breakfast can be enjoyed on the scenic lake terrace, which, with its open-air bar, also offers great evening entertainment. There is an indoor pool and sauna, and a range of treatments are available.
Savoy Berlin
The Savoy Berlin has been known for its friendliness and comfort for over 70 years - author Thomas Mann once declared as much. This small, central hotel is charming and has a classical setting and exceptional service. Relaxing treatments are available such as massage and reflexology, as well as acupuncture. There is also the exclusive Times bar, with its wide choice of Cuban cigars and delicacies.
Artist Riverside Hotel and Spa
Located in the Mitte district on the banks of the River Spree, this stylish Berlin hotel is very well placed for sightseeing and has both moderate and more luxurious accommodation. Rooms have art nouveau-inspired décor, with warm gold colours and individual touches - there is even a suite with a golden bathtub. The hotel also has a spa offering various beauty treatments.
Honigmond Berlin-Mitte
This absolute gem of a hotel is tucked away on a quiet street in the north end of Mitte and is a real find - the building's exterior doesn't suggest its gorgeous combination of period features and swish modernity inside. The rooms are very beautifully appointed with antiques scattered throughout, and the breakfast is excellent. There's a second building too on a nearby street, in much the same style.
Soho House Berlin
The Soho House empire has opened its own private club and boutique hotel in Mitte, east Berlin's achingly hip heart. The 40 bedrooms vary enormously by price and layout, but all are beautifully appointed and include vintage furniture, post-modern decorating combinations and quirky features such as record players and LPs in each room. Look no further for the hippest place to stay in Berlin, and bring your swimmers for the glamorous rooftop pool.
Esplanade Grand Hotel Berlin
Pleasantly situated on the banks of a canal and a short walk from both the leafy green Tiergarten and the KaDeWe department store, the seven-storey Esplanade Grand Hotel is a cheap hotel option in Berlin and caters for business travellers as well as tourists. The hotel even has its own conference and restaurant ship, MS Esplanade, moored nearby on the canal. Leisure facilities include a swimming pool and fitness room.
Ostel
The prices vary enormously here at this unique showcase for the garish and yet somehow timelessly fabulous interior design of East Germany. Part hotel and part museum, this is definitely one of Berlin's most idiosyncratic places to stay; prepare for lots of brown and orange. It's also a stone's throw from techno temple Berghain and the adjacent attractions of hipster Friedrichshain.
The Circus Hotel
Fantastically located in the very heart of Mitte, the Circus Hotel is the latest venture of the Circus group, who also run one of Berlin's most popular hostels just across the road. Here you'll find 60 simple, yet stylish rooms with their own ready-loaded iPods, free Wi-Fi and a great courtyard for relaxing on, all at a very affordable price.
