Things to do in Bilbao
Bilbao is temptingly close to La Rioja, the wine-growing region from which the popular Rioja wines come. If you fancy a wine-tasting tour out to La Rioja, there are several companies which run visits to the wineries; or, if you have a car and a bit of Spanish under your belt, check out the wine regions and bodegas listed in Maribel’s Guides and do it independently. If time is a factor, Cellar Tours.

The beaches along the Bay of Biscay are simply stunning, and sun-worshippers will relish the sandy coastal strips near Bilbao. The most impressive include Palay de Bakio - a lovely cliffs and golden sands combo about 27km (16 miles) out of the city; the Playa de la Arena Muskiz - a vast expanse of sand with a children’s play area and good parking 21km (13 miles) out of Bilbao on the road to Santander; and Playa de Azkorri, which is more isolated, awarded for its cleanliness and a top spot for watersports.
Catch some great waves on the Basque coastline, and hire surfboards and other watersports equipment from the many surf shops fringing beaches such as Mundaka. For the dedicated, sign up to one of the surf tours that head out to the nearby beaches, or surf camps based near the swell. Recommended companies who run popular surf trips include Surf Spain, and Nomad Surfers.
