Money & duty free for Bonaire
US Dollar (USD; symbol $) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of $100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1. Coins are in denominations of $1, and 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents.
The US Dollar replaced The Netherlands Antilles Guilder or Florin as the currency of Bonaire on 1 January 2011.
American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted.
To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller's cheques in US Dollars.
Mon-Fri 0900-1200 and 1400-1600.
There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency.
Most major currencies, including US Dollars, Pounds Sterling and Euros, are easily exchanged. ATMs are located around the island.
Bonaire duty free
The following items may be imported into Bonaire by persons over 15 years of age without incurring customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos (or 3g of each) or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco.
• 2L of alcoholic beverages or 2L of wine.
• An unlimited quantity of perfume.
• Gifts up to a value of ANG100.
Note: If the total value of goods per passenger exceeds ANG500, a declaration should be made on a customs form and cleared at the freight department. It should also be noted that the import of leather articles from Haiti is not advisable.
