Brussels history
In centuries past, Brussels was dominated by a succession of rulers from Rome, Spain, Austria, France, Holland and Germany - Belgium winning independence only in 1830. Today, this modern, multicultural city can claim with some justification to be the 'Capital of Europe'. Though bilingual in (and somewhat torn between) French and Flemish, the common language of many of its residents is English.
