Getting around Cambridge
The city's main sites are within easy walking distance from the centre, so most visitors to Cambridge are able to explore the city on foot, which is another good reason to use the Park & Ride car parks outside of town.
Stagecoach (tel: (01223) 423 578; www.stagecoachbus.com) operates a network of frequent and reliable buses that provide access to all parts of Cambridge. Several types of tickets are available. In addition, a free city centre shuttle bus service runs every 15 minutes (Mon-Sat, 0900-1800).
There are several taxi ranks throughout the city, including at the train and bus stations. Taxis can also be hailed anywhere on the street. To pre-book a taxi, try Andy Cabs (tel: (01223) 571 144), Atlas Cabs (tel: 0845 260 600) or United Taxis (tel: (01223) 313 131).
There are numerous car hire companies operating in Cambridge though you will only need a car if you want to explore the region. These include Alamo Car Rental (tel: 0871 384 1086; www.alamo.co.uk), Avis Rent a Car (tel: 0870 608 6327; www.avis.co.uk), and Cambridge Car and Van Rental (tel: (01223) 464 045; www.cambridgecarandvanrental.co.uk).
Cambridge is one of the best cycling cities in Britain, with over 130km (80 miles) of cycle lanes and routes. Beware however that if you are not an experienced cyclist you may well wish to avoid the rush hours during term time when many hundreds of student cyclists take to the streets en masse.
There are plenty of cycle hire shops, many of which are located in the heart of the city: Cambridge Station Cycles (tel: (01223) 307 125; www.stationcycles.co.uk), City Cycle Hire (tel: (01223) 365 629; www.citycyclehire.com), and H Drake (tel: (01223) 363 468).
