Hotels in Cape Town
Numerous new Cape Town hotels opened for the 2010 World Cup, relegating many old favourites to second division. There is a wide choice of accommodation to suit all budgets.
The hotels below have been grouped into three pricing categories:
Luxury (over R3,000)
Moderate (R900 to R1,500)
Cheap (under R900)
Those are the starting prices for a standard double room and include taxes and breakfast.
Ashgrove Villa
If you were any higher up you'd be in a crevice on the mountain. Where the city runs out, the three star Ashgrove Villa appears, with lovely views over Cape Town and a friendly welcome. This bed & breakfast property offers no air conditioning - although fans are available - making midnight dunks in the small plunge pool tempting. It's within energetic walking distance to the city, though you may prefer a taxi for the return trip.
Cape Diamond
A good value 60-room hotel right in the city, with individually decorated rooms that are a cut above many others in it price range. This historical hotel has a roof top terrace bar plus a Jacuzzi for impressive city views. There's a restaurant and a theatre café where buffet dinners are sometimes served against the backdrop of live music.
Cape Royale Luxury Hotel
Opened in 2008, with rooms and suites as big on space as they are on design and luxury. Guests have a choice of three elegant restaurants, a spa and wellness centre, a pool on the roof and state-of-the-art meeting rooms. A complimentary shuttle will transport guests within a 5km (3.1 miles) radius.
City Lodge Pinelands
City Lodge Pinelands is an eight-minute drive from Cape Town International Airport, with rooms overlooking the Mowbray Golf Course. Facilities include a swimming pool, mini gym and boardrooms.
Courtyard Hotel Cape Town
Courtyard Hotel Cape Town is located 15 minutes from Cape Town International Airport by car. The hotel has a swimming pool, bar and restaurant and provides conferencing services.
David's
This elegantly modernised Victorian terrace has been turned into a popular bed and breakfast in the heart of trendy Green Point. Close to the city and praised for offering a warm welcome and being good value, David's boasts a formal and an informal lounge, free internet access and a little garden and sun deck. Self-catering apartments are also available.
Inn on the Square
This striking building is situated on historic Greenmarket Square, an excellent location unbeatable for fans of city life. Previously known as the Park Inn, it offers friendly service, views of Table Mountain from its top floors, a pool and a sauna. It is also features The Famous Butchers Grill restaurant and cigar lounge, the latter of which beckons with an extensive selection of cognacs.
Protea Hotel Fire & Ice
This adventure and sports-orientated hotel has a sound room with a state-of-the-art sound system and plasma screens for watching DVDs. Guests in its bar and restaurant can watch swimmers in the illuminated pool through a glass-walled side. Staff know all about organising adrenaline activities including abseiling, hiking, shark cage diving and parasailing. Free wireless internet access too.
Road Lodge Cape Town Airport Hotel
The Road Lodge Cape Town Airport Hotel is situated on the site of Cape Town International Airport and provides secure parking, wireless internet and a 24-hour reception.
Taj Cape Town
A hot business hotel that's right in the heart of the city centre, but equally big on leisure with sauna and steam rooms, a gym, spa and massage services and an indoor pool. Its restaurants, Bombay Brasserie named after its London namesake, Mint and Twanky champagne and oyster bar are all highly regarded.
The One&Only
Exclusivity at a price is the hallmark of the One&Only, with panoramic views of Table Mountain and the marina. It boasts the city's largest rooms and suites, decorated with local modern art and including oversized marble bathrooms. Valet parking, a personal butler, a spa set on a private landscaped island and a movie lounge await. Its restaurants are overseen by two world-class chefs: Gordon Ramsay's Maze for seafood and game and Nobuyuki Matsuhisa's Nobu for Japanese cuisine.
The Ritz
The most unusual attraction about the Ritz is its revolving restaurant, the only one in Cape Town. The three-star hotel is only 300m (984ft) from the beach in Sea Point. Opt for the superior rooms on the top floors to actually get the views you came to Cape Town for. There's an outdoor pool and a café bar.
