Le Gallois
Le Gallois ('the Welshman') is an institution in the Welsh capital thanks to new head chef Grady Atkins. The food is not only excellent, it is also very distinctive (there aren't that many restaurants around serving French food with a Welsh twist) and well presented. Add to this a relaxed atmosphere and friendly service and you are onto a winner. Booking advised.
Dorothy's
'The best chippy in town', many locals will tell you. Definitely a Cardiff institution (it's been going for over 50 years), so do give it a go. Fish and chips (the cod is excellent), chicken curry, fries, the usual suspects. Perfect after a night on the town.
Armless Dragon
This warm, informal and inviting place is a long-standing foodie haven and the epitome of Modern Welsh cooking, taking classic dishes – such as cawl (a Welsh stew) and rarebit – and fresh organic and local ingredients and serving them up with a sophisticated gastronomic twist.
Tides
Inside Cardiff Bay’s St David's Hotel is an award-winning restaurant, Tides, which offers beautiful seafood and excellent local produce, in plush interior boasting superb views of the Millennium waterfront. There is a terrace for alfresco dinning in summer.
Thai House
This excellent Thai restaurant has been going strong since 1985 and offers delicious food and friendly, professional service by staff wearing traditional Thai dress. The restaurant does fish and meat dishes equally well, and the curries are fantastic. The house speciality, however, is fillet of salmon and broccoli marinated in a red curry paste and steamed in banana leaves.
Pearl of the Orient
Located at Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay, Pearl of the Orient has a wide-ranging oriental menu taking in Cantonese, Peking, Malaysian and Szechwan dishes. The food is delicious, and the décor is modern and elegant with a spacious layout and artful lighting. The service is also excellent.UNite
