Chiang Mai history

Founded in 1296 as the capital of the Kingdom of Lanna, Chiang Mai has become increasingly prosperous and increasingly urbane with the passing centuries. Chiang Mai built its fortunes on teak, silk and opium, traded by a kaleidoscope of hill tribes from the mountains stretching north to Myanmar and Laos.
