A colourful parade with marching bands makes its way along Marshall Boulevard as part of the city's annual Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Numerous vendors line the streets and huge crowds gather to watch the procession go by. Celebrated by Mexican-American communities throughout the US, the parade is held to remember the victory the Mexican forces had over the invading French army in the Battle of Puebla on 5 May, 1862. Embarrassed by the defeat, the French were to return with a bigger army and eventually took Mexico City in 1864 but the day of the original battle has gone down in history as the triumph of the Mexican spirit and is celebrated throughout North America.
