Rome sees a constant stream of visitors throughout the year, with high season periods being July and August, Easter and Christmas. Prices are usually lowest in January-February or October-November, but it's always worth asking if there are special offers available. Visitors can often get good deals by booking online.

IVA (value-added tax) at 10% is included in hotel prices but is usually added to the price before it is quoted. The hotels below have been grouped into four different pricing categories:

Business

Cavalieri Hilton
Sleek superhotel, the Cavalieri Hilton stands upon Monte Mario hill, in six hectares (15 acres) of landscaped grounds, 20 minutes drive from the city centre, 30 minutes from the airport. Its 375 rooms, each with a balcony and often wonderful views, are luxurious and sumptuously furnished. With 14 congress halls and meeting rooms (seating 15 to 2,100), this hotel is ideal for conventions. The superlative roof garden restaurant, La Pergola (see Restaurants), has three Michelin stars.

Hotel Atlante Star
Well managed and friendly, the Hotel Atlante Star lies five minutes from the Vatican. Popular with executives, its 85 rooms are lavishly decorated with antique furniture and heavy swathed curtains, and have a sense of old-time splendour. Some have panoramic views and Jacuzzi baths. There is a well-run business centre, plus a 65-seat conference room. A smaller and cheaper sister hotel, the Hotel Atlante Garden, lies close by at Via Crescenzio 78A.

Rose Garden Palace
Just off central Via Veneto, Rome's swinging 1960s heartland, this is a business-like oasis. The interior is contemporary, with stylish design that sets it apart. Lobby, lounge and ground floor are coloured relaxing hues of salmon, blue and grey. The 59 bedrooms and six suites are spacious and serene, and there is an outdoor courtyard and rose garden (hence the hotel's name) where you can breakfast and dine in fine weather. There are excellent meeting facilities, with three rooms (the largest can host 50 people).

Luxury

Hassler-Villa Medici
Just above the Spanish Steps, a mere catwalk strut from the designer clothes shops of Via Condotti, the elegant Hassler has awe-inspiring panoramic views over Rome. It's hosted a firmament of stars including Bill Clinton and Tom Cruise. The 99 rooms (including 13 suites) are decorated in classic style, with sweeping floor-to-ceiling curtains, Venetian glass chandeliers and marble bathrooms, while many have either a balcony or terrace.

Hotel Eden
Oozing glamour, the Eden, located between Via Veneto and the Spanish Steps, dates back to 1889. Frequented by stars and millionaires, A-list former guests range from Ernest Hemingway to Cameron Diaz. Its 121 rooms (including 13 suites) are richly decorated with antique furniture, fine linen sheets and splendid marble bathrooms. Some of the most expensive top-floor rooms have balconies and offer stunning views, as does the highly acclaimed Michelin-starred La Terrazza dell'Eden rooftop restaurant.

Portrait Suites
Owned by the Salvatore Ferragamo family, better known for their exquisite shoe creations, this is an equally exquisite pied-à-terre that overlooks the designer-lined street of Via Condotti. It's not a hotel but an intimate residence, with only 14 studios and suites (each with a sleek kitchenette). Ideal for privacy-loving fashionistas, there's a personal feel that you won't get in a hotel. There's a stunning roof terrace that feels like an outdoor living room, with views over Via Condotti, Rome's rooftops and up to the Spanish Steps.

Albergo del Sole (al Biscione)
In the centro storico (historic centre), this charming but unpretentious hotel lies in a side street between lively Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Navona. Its 59 bedrooms are simply but comfortably furnished, each with a telephone and satellite TV and some with beamed ceilings. A peaceful roof garden terrace offers some stunning views over the surrounding rooftops and church domes.

La Cisterna
Hidden away in a narrow, cobbled side street, a five-minute walk from the beautiful Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, this small, friendly hotel is housed in a refurbished 18th-century building. There are 20 simple bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, telephone and satellite TV (some have wooden beamed ceilings), and a bar and peaceful terrace garden out the back.

Other Recommendations

Aleph Hotel
Hell and heaven are the themes of this otherworldly Adam D Tihany-designed hotel, set in what used to be a bank not far from the Via Veneto. The entrance hall, restaurant and bar are fiery red, the rooftop terrace has pure white armchairs and sunshades. The pared-down elegance of the bedrooms is inspired by 1930s and '40s design and have blown-up photos of Roman sights, TVs in the bathrooms, and huge beds.

Hotel Locarno
Close to Piazza del Popolo, the classy yet moderately priced Locarno dates back to 1925. It's full of atmospheric art deco details, from its rattling cage lift to the wood-polished bar. Each of its sometimes subdued 68 rooms and suites (the latter are in a new luxury wing) is uniquely decorated with discreet antiques and coordinated Liberty-style wallpaper and fabrics.
