Near the Old Town is this small bar/restaurant that has a surprisingly diverse menu considering the price. A fine assortment of food accompanies plenty of beer. It converts into a club from the late evening hours onwards.

Restaurant Goldener Hirsch
Salzburg's most coveted tables during the Salzburg Festival are the ones in the main restaurant in the Goldener Hirsch Hotel. Many a star on the classical music scene has dined here. Like the hotel itself, the restaurant is a treasure, and the food (mainly traditional Austrian) is absolutely superb.

Sternbräu
This lovely microbrewery features plenty of traditional Austrian dishes on the menu, plus an attached Italian Trattoria, large garden, and self-service bar for those in a hurry. Turn up for dinner and you'll be treated to a Sound of Music show (extra charge). It's located in a courtyard between Griesgasse and Getreidegasse.

Stiftkeller St Peter
Austria's oldest restaurant by far - going back some 1,200 years to Carolingian times - it is said that Charlemagne himself dined here. Despite its age, the restaurant is alive and well and offers one of the finest dining experiences in Salzburg. The candlelit Mozart dinner concerts in the baroque hall are magical.

Weisses Kreuz
Housed in the hotel of the same name, the Weisses Kreuz (White Cross) is easy to find at the foot of Salzburg's imposing fortress. The menu is a mix of hearty Austrian fare and Balkan specialities, which are best washed down in typical Central European style with one of the 10 schnapps on offer.
