Stuttgart Excursions
Stuttgart lies at the heart of an important German wine producing area, and the tourist office (tel: (711) 222 8240; website: www.stuttgart-tourist.de) offers a choice of excursions to vineyards, including tastings and a chance to meet local winegrowers.
Day trip options include Lake Constance, Europe's third largest lake, the historic university city of Heidelberg, located to the north of Stuttgart along the picturesque Neckar valley and the town of Calw in the northern Black Forest, birthplace of poet Hermann Hesse.
The fairytale Hohenzollern Castle stands on a hill outside the town of Tübingen, which is also a good candidate for a day trip from the city.
