Toulouse, is known first and foremost as a fortified medieval town. There is
evidence, however, that this rocky outcrop was used as a settlement as early as
the sixth century BC, before becoming a fully-fledged Roman town and fitted
with ramparts in the third and fourth centuries AD. Other sights include the
famous old bridge over the river Aude, and the Bastide St-Louis and Canal du
