Carcassonne: A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, the Walled City of Carcassonne, 70km (43.5 miles) from Toulouse, is known first and foremost as a fortified medieval town. There is evidence, however, that this rocky outcrop was used as a settlement as early as the sixth century BC, before becoming a fully-fledged Roman town and fitted with ramparts in the third and fourth centuries AD. Other sights include the famous old bridge over the river Aude, and the Bastide St-Louis and Canal du Midi, which runs through the city. The Carcassonne Tourist Office, 28 rue de Verdun (tel: (04) 6810 2430; website: www.carcassonne.org) can provide further information.
