This reasonably priced mid-range hotel is in a decent location. It is a bit shabby and not much to look at, but is safe, has clean rooms with en-suite bathrooms, useful facilities, a restaurant and its own bar.

Central YMCA
This is a well-appointed, central hostel. Good-value rooms, reasonable food, swimming pool, tennis courts and aerobics studio make this more akin to a small hotel than a traditional YMCA though.

Iqbal Hotel
This is a popular traveller's haunt that is basic, but clean and friendly. Front rooms are a little noisy, but all are secure and there is hot water available in the mornings. A cheap laundry service, secure left-luggage facilities and an information and safari-booking desk are additional benefits.

Serena Hotel
Probably Nairobi's most elegant hotel, this sophisticated place draws on influences from across Africa and is excellently furnished with sculptures, textiles and wooden furniture. Rooms are spotless, have marble bathrooms and views over the grounds and lush gardens. There is also a pool, health club and shops. Unfortunately the adjacent area is not safe to walk around at night.
