Caracas Culture

Caracas has a busy if somewhat under-funded arts scene. The principal stage for theatre, dance and classical music is the Complejo Cultural Teresa Carreño (tel: (212) 574 9122; website: www.teatroteresacarreno.gob.ve) on Paseo Colón in Parque Los Caobos. It hosts frequent productions by the Compañía Nacional de Teatro and top dance groups such as the Ballet Nuevo Mundo de Caracas. Another famous theatre venue is the Ateneo de Caracas (tel: (212) 573 4400), also in Los Caobos, and you can see more productions at the younger, funkier Teatro Transnocho Cultural (tel: (212) 993 1910; website: www.transnochocultural.com) in the Centro Comercial Paseo Las Mercedes.

Caracas has long been an exciting hub for salsa singers and Latin pop. For live salsa bands, try age-old salsateca El Maní es Así, Avenida Francisco Solano López, and for quality live jazz, the place is the Juan Sebastián Bar, Avenida Venezuela.

Local newspapers, and especially the El Universal on Sundays, have listings of upcoming shows. There are also plenty of cinemas to choose from, including two in the Centro Comercial Sambil on Avenida Libertador in Chacao.
