Panamanian nightlife is as sophisticated as it is sultry, which means that you are going to have to don your best threads and pay to play. Hip areas in the capital include the famous Calle Uruguay in Bella Vista, the downtown precincts and the Causeway.

Many establishments are open throughout the night, especially during weekends. With the exception of the small pubs, most bars double up as restaurants. There are also several casinos in Panama City for those interested in testing their luck.

Bars: In Casco Viejo, Platea is a swinging night spot, while La Kava, Habibi's and The Wine Bar are popular Calle Uruguay drinking establishments. Other good options include Mango's in the downtown area and the Traffic Island on the Causeway.

Clubs: Calle Uruguay is the top nightspot in Panama City. Liquid is your best spot for modern electronica, and attracts some of the best DJs in Latin America. Opah is the place to be seen, though make sure you're dressed to kill. Deep Room is the city's famed after-hours club.

Live Music: Bongo, Calle 42, is one of the city's top live-music venues with a good variety of rotating acts. If you're looking to hear live salsa, look no further than Bolero, also on Calle 42. Both venues are located in the downtown precincts.
