The rooftop restaurant of the Victoria Plaza Hotel (owned by Radisson) is a sparkling space decorated with crystal chandeliers and soft furnishings imported from Italy. Some may find it a little chintzy but the menu is adventurous and international, while views of the bay and hills around Montevideo are breathtaking.

El Fogón
At the bargain end of the scale, this traditional grill house serves sizeable steaks with chips, as well as local chicken and fish dishes. The efficient service draws city centre workers for lunch, and the place gets crowded again late in the evening.

La Vegetariana
This is one of a chain of four restaurants around the city and a rarity in Uruguay, serving decent vegetarian and vegan food. All you can eat for a fixed price, although some of the dishes could do with more seasoning.
