Basel Business Etiquette

Business Etiquette

Business hours in Basel are typically Monday to Friday 0800-1200 and 1400-1700. Dress code is generally smart but relaxed. The usual greeting in both business and social settings is a firm handshake.  Business contacts should be addressed formally by their surname prefixed by Herr (for a man) or Frau (for a woman) or any other academic or honorary titles. First names are unacceptable until their use is invited. A little introductory chit-chat is expected, but meetings are otherwise formal and humour is considered largely inappropriate. If invited to a colleague's home, you should bring a small gift of flowers (these should be unwrapped) or chocolates.
