Belgrade doesn't really have live music venues as such, but many of the bars and clubs do regularly host live bands; for the latest news ask around and look for posters and flyers - particularly in the student areas. And the city does occasionally host big international bands and artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Rolling Stones, but these performances usually take place out of the city centre.

The city also supports a strong theatrical tradition (although most performances are in Serbian) and there are several good theatres in the city; one of the best is the National Theatre (tel: (0)11 328 1333; website: www.narodnopozoriste.co.yu) on Francuska. The Madlenianum (tel: (0)11 316 2533; website: www.madlenianum.co.yu) on Glavna in Zemun has an excellent reputation for its year-round programme of opera, theatre and dance productions.

Belgraders are also passionate about films and there are numerous cinemas in the city, most of which screen the latest Hollywood blockbusters in English. For more unusual films, try Kinoteka (tel: (0)11 262 2555; website: www.kinoteka.org.yu) which is famed as the home of one of the most prominent and comprehensive film collections in Europe.
