Belgrade Excursions
Ada Ciganlija
Once an island but now a peninsula, Ada Ciganlija is a fantastic place to while away a summer's afternoon on the beach or at one of the many bars and restaurants overlooking the lake and river. For the more energetic, there are all manner of sports and recreational pursuits on offer including sailing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, skating, rock climbing, golf, football, tennis, bungee-jumping and paint ball. Ada is just 4km (2.5 miles) southwest of the city centre close to New Belgrade and is easily reached by bus or taxi.
Mount Avala
Visitors staying longer than a few days may want to explore beyond Belgrade itself. The region offers no end of options ranging from kayaking and winery tours to skiing and ice climbing. Mount Avala lies only 18km (11 miles) south of Belgrade and is a popular day trip for hikers. It's also home to the Unknown Soldier Monument which sits atop the 511m (1,677ft) peak and was erected in memory of the soldiers who died during WWI.
Novi Sad
Novi Sad, Serbia' second city, 85km (53 miles) north of Belgrade, is a possible day trip, although it is really worth several days. Don't miss the impressive Petrovaradin Citadel and a stroll along the city's charming pedestrianised streets, dotted with cafés, bars and museums. July is a good month to visit, as the annual Exit Festival sees the town flooded with festival-goers. If you have more time though, make sure you explore the monasteries and vineyards of Fruška Gora.
