The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (tel: (01751) 472 508; website: www.northyorkshiremoorsrailway.com) traverses stunning windswept scenery along 29km (18 miles) of preserved steam railway. It is on the moors that Emily Brontë set her famous novel Wuthering Heights. Haworth was the hometown of the Brontë sisters and typifies the gorgeous villages that pepper the verdant, rolling Yorkshire Dales (website: www.destinationdales.org).

For those who tire of the quaint, Castle Howard (tel: (01653) 648 444; website: www.castlehoward.co.uk) is one of England's grandest remaining baroque mansions. There are many such stately homes in North Yorkshire.

The northeast coast (website: www.discoveryorkshirecoast.com) is not far from York and veers from traditional fun at Scarborough in the form of funfair rides and fish and chips, to the charming, cobblestone Whitby, with its somewhat gothic reputation for inspiring Bram Stoker to write Dracula.

Eden Camp
(website: www.edencamp.co.uk), just 29km (18 miles) from York, is a unique museum housed in an original prisoner of war camp built in 1942. Each of the 33 Nissen huts displays a different experience from wartime Britain, including a night during the Blitz and a RAF commands and operations room in action.

Harrogate
(website: www.harrogate.gov.uk) is an elegant spa town, with the renowned Royal Pump Room and beautiful parks and gardens.
