York - Getting There By Rail

When York Railway Station, in its present incarnation, was unveiled in 1877, it was the largest railway station in the country. Arriving at York by train is still thrilling and the station, on Station Road, is only a 5-minute walk, in a southwesterly direction, from the city centre.

York is on the East Coast mainline and is very well connected, with services to Scotland and to regional centres throughout England, including Birmingham, Bradford, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Newcastle. Services are operated by National Express East Coast (tel: 0845 722 5111; website: www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com) and also Midland Mainline (tel: 0845 712 5678; website: www.midlandmainline.com), Northern Rail (tel: 0845 000 0125; website: www.northernrail.org) and Virgin (tel: 0845 722 2333; website: www.virgintrains.co.uk).
