York Shopping
York is famous for its chocolate, with legendary ties to the famous Rowntree confectionary name, and the headquarters of both Nestlé and Terry's. But none of these can match the succulent treats offered at Monk Bar Chocolatiers, 1 Goodramgate and 7 The Shambles. To continue the food theme, a trip to either Betty's, 6-8 St Helen's Square, or Little Betty's, 46 Stonegate, is a must; the company's famous teas, breads and cakes make good souvenirs.
Being a historical city, and being one known for championing the arts, it is little wonder that York seems filled with both antique and design shops. Gillygate, especially, is crammed with shops showcasing local talent, from interior design to arts and crafts. The contemporary jewellery of Azendi, 20 Colliergate, is gorgeously unique. From the contemporary to the old, the Red House Antiques Centre, 1 Duncombe Place, is an 18th-century townhouse, which just happens to be one of York's premier antique shops.
York's daily Newgate Market, situated in Newgate, adjacent to The Shambles, also has over 100 stalls, with particular emphasis on local produce.
