Palma has a comprehensive bus network, operated by Empresa Municipal de Transports de Palma de Mallorca (EMT) (tel: 900 700 710; website: www.emtpalma.es). There are over 20 routes, most of which operate approximately 0700-2100/2200. Most buses pass through the main bus station in Plaça d'Espanya, and timetables and route maps can be found at every bus stop. Consider buying a book of bus tickets (targeta 10 viatges urbana) if you intend to travel frequently by bus. Discounted travel is available for students and OAPs, and children under 14 years travel free.

A new metro line, which took two years to build and cost €120 million, opened in April 2007, with nine stops linking the city centre with the University of the Balearic Islands campus.

Thanks to an excellent bus network, it is only worth hiring a car if you intend to leave the city and explore the island.
