Public Transport

Be aware that Phoenix is spread out. The best way to navigate the area is by car. Valley Metro (tel: (602) 262 7433; website: www.valleymetro.org) operates buses and its RideShare system connects commuters with van and carpools. For maps, schedules and fare options get its Bus Book, available online. Starting in December 2008, a Metro Light Rail service will provide access to the airport, the convention centre and other city locations.

Taxis

Taxis must be booked by telephone. Main operators are: AAA Cab (tel: (602) 437 4000); Allstate (tel: (602) 275 8888) and Discount (tel: (602) 266 1110).

Car Hire

Foreign driving licences, providing they are in English, are valid. An International Driving Permit is also a good idea, as this carries a photograph. Optional CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) insurance is recommended if not already covered by the driver's own policy. Minimum driving age ranges from 21 to 25. Major companies include Alamo (tel: 1 800 327 9633; website: www.alamo.com), Avis (tel: 1 800 331 1212; website: www.avis.com), Budget (tel: 1 800 527 0700; website: www.budget.com), Hertz (tel: 1 800 654 3131; website: www.hertz.com) and Thrifty (tel: 1 800 367 2277; website: www.thrifty.com).

Bicycle Hire

Cactus Bike Rental, at 4747 East Elliot Road and 1960 South Alma School Road in Chandler (tel: (480) 940 7433 or 1 877 743 3291; website: www.cactusbike.com), rents a variety of bikes and helmets.
