Business
Purpose built for business travellers and tourists, the Athenaeum InterContinental lies on a busy thoroughfare south of the Acropolis. Its 489 rooms and 54 suites are well equipped, modern and stylish. There are extensive conference facilities, an excellent business centre, a gym, sauna, solarium and open-air pool, plus a rooftop restaurant offering splendid views over the capital.

Situated close to the Evangelismos metro station, on the edge of Kolonáki, the refurbished Hilton Hotel is modern, smart and popular with business travellers. It has 517 rooms (of which 19 are suites). A small supplement is payable for rooms with Acropolis views. There are 14 meeting rooms, a business centre, a vast exhibition space, six restaurants and bars, a swimming pool and a health centre.

Luxury
This exclusive hotel has finally been restored to its former opulence and is now part of Starwood Hotels' 'Luxury Collection'. The city's oldest and most prestigious hotel opened in 1872 and since then royalty, heads of state, film and rock stars have all stayed here. There are 290 guest rooms and 37 suites, a rooftop restaurant with an Acropolis view, a health club and spa, and an outdoor rooftop pool and bar.

This luxury hotel, located in Kolonáki on the way up Lykavittós Hill, affords fantastic views over Athens. Its 154 rooms and suites are individually furnished in modern style with a classical touch. The Grand Balcon restaurant is set in a lovely roof garden and there is a rooftop swimming pool and bar, as well as a gym and sauna.

Close to Omonia, this boutique hotel occupies a refurbished neoclassical building. The 30 individually furnished rooms combine modern designer furniture, antiques and contemporary Greek paintings. There's free Wi-Fi and a restaurant but no bar. The staff are noted for their helpfulness and many guests return time and time again.

The 67 rooms of the Plaka Hotel comprise pine floors, minimalist Italian-style furniture and cheerful, primary-coloured fabrics. Other Recommendations
One of three new Design Hotels in Athens, Fresh opened in 2004, bringing designer chic to the gritty Central Market area. The 133 rooms are decorated in vivid oranges, pinks or greens, and come complete with funky minimalist furniture and plasma TV. There's a rooftop cafe with a small pool and sun deck, plus a fitness centre.
