The diversity of bars, pubs and clubs in Cambridge is impressive, and it is no doubt owing to the fact that the city attracts people from all over the world - students, academics, tourists. Good bars include B Bar, Market Passage, which is a modern, stylish bar with excellent food and drink and live jazz on Thursdays; The Box Tree, Napier Street, a sleek bar serving tapas, cocktails, wine and live music on Thursdays; and La Raza, 4-6 The Basement, Rose Crescent, a classy restaurant and bar near the market square offering tapas-style food and extensive wine and cocktail lists.

There are many excellent pubs in the city too. Among them are Quinn's Irish Pub (at the Holiday Inn Hotel), St Tibb's Row, The Maypole, Park Street and The Champion of the Thames, 68 King Street, all of which attract both students and locals.

There is no shortage of clubs aiming for the student market in the city. Ballare, Heidelberg Gardens (website: www.ballare.co.uk) and Club 22, 22 Sidney Street (website: www.lifebarcafe.com) have plenty of student nights with party atmosphere and music ranging from chart and dance to R&B and hip hop. Club Salsa, 1 Station Road (website: www.club-salsa.co.uk), is a hot salsa dancing club, while Fez Club, 15 Market Passage (website: www.cambridgefez.com), is an elegant Moroccan nightclub with top DJs.

The Junction, Clifton Road (website: www.junction.co.uk) is a live music and show venue and also a kind of cultural nightclub with an interesting, slightly alternative ambience. Kambar, Wheeler Street (website: www.kambar.co.uk), has a similar kind of character, specialises in indie and alternative music and is housed in a 17th-century building.

Live music venues in Cambridge, include the Portland Arms, 129 Chesterton Road (tel: (01223) 357268) and Upstairs@The Graduate, 16 Chesterton Road (tel: (01223) 301416), which often features local bands. A bigger venue is The Junction (see above), and the biggest of them all is the Cambridge Corn Exchange, Wheeler Street (website: www.cornex.co.uk), the city's centre for performing arts and entertainment.
