Some of the most magnificent natural scenery Norway has to offer is available in the Stavanger region. A boat trip into the 42km long Lysefjorden is a must. The fjord landscape is absolutely amazing, with Prekestolen (The Pulpit Rock) a particularly impressive highlight with its square horizontal plateau on top of a rock that rises 600m (1,968ft) straight up from the fjord down below.

The tourist ferry on Lysefjord runs from June to September and is operated by Veteran Fjord Cruise (tel: 5186 8788; website: www.vfc.no), which also offers sightseeing tours to Prekestolen from the middle of June until the end of August. Rodne Fjord Cruise (tel: 5189 5270; website: www.rodne.no) offers sightseeing tours to Prekestolen the whole year round - only on Saturday and Sunday in the winter time (Oct-Apr), while daily or even several times per day in the summer season.

From Prekestolhytta there it is a 2-hour steep hike up to the top. Good footwear and some physical fitness are recommended to make the hike. That applies even more to those wanting to climb up Kjerag, a majestic mountain rising 1,000m (3,280ft) straight up above sea level deeper into the fjord. For more information about Prekestolen, Kjerag and how to get there, contact the tourist information centre in Stavanger (tel: 5185 9200; website: www.regionstavanger.com).

Another destination for an excursion from Stavanger is neighbouring city Sandnes, a pretty town with the lovely Sandved Park running as a green belt through its central parts.  Jærmuseet (tel: 5197 2540; website: www.jaermuseet.no) is developing a section about science and industry in Sandnes. So far the old Krossen Oats Mill and exhibitions showing the local history of pottery and brickworks as well as Leonardo da Vinci's many inventions have opened to the public. Sandnes also has Norway's only butterfly park, Sommerfuglparken (tel: 4767 8033; website: www.sommerfuglparken.no), in addition to the Rogaland Arboretum (tel: 5167 2107;  website: www.rogalandarboret.no), which has more than 1,400 different tree and bush species in beautiful parkland.
