Sightseeing Overview

The most famous attraction in the Stavanger region is actually some distance from the city itself. Prekestolen, The Pulpit Rock, is located nearly halfway into Lysefjorden, a fjord with a deserved reputation as one of the most magnificent in Norway.

Other attractions in the region surrounding the city include the medieval Utstein Monastery and the three crosses at Hafrsfjord, marking the spot where the battle that decisively led to the unification of Norway took place in the early Middle Ages.

Within the city itself the medieval Stavanger Cathedral with its exceptionally well preserved exterior is a must-see, and the same goes for Old Stavanger with its narrow streets and many wooden houses.

Several of the city's museums, such as the Norwegian Petroleum Museum and Stavanger Maritime Museum, are also of interest. Rogaland Art Museum with its lovely location by the Mosvann Lake is also recommended, and for a less conventional but arguably more fun experience, check out the Norwegian Museum of Childhood.

Passes

There are currently no tourist passes available in Stavanger, but it is worth noting that a ticket bought for any one of the following museums (Stavanger Museum, Stavanger Maritime Museum, the Norwegian Canning Museum, Leedal and Breidablikk) also gives the ticket holder access to the others on the day of purchase, as they all belong to Stavanger Museum.
