The beautiful Río Urubamba Valley, popularly known as the Sacred Valley, lies about 15km (9 miles) north of Cusco. Highly regarded by the Incas, it is home to the impressive Inca citadels of Pisac and Ollantaytambo. It is also packed with other Inca sites, including the salt pans at Salinas and the amphitheatre-like terraced site at Moray. Other attractions include the traditional Andean markets in the towns of Pisac and Chinchero. Agencies in Cusco offer day trips throughout the valley, stopping at each of the sites. Alternatively you can explore the valley on your own and at a more leisurely pace by using public transport. See Tours of the City for a list of operators.
