The Hague is often regarded as an excursion from Amsterdam. However if you wish to turn the tables, the capital is only 60km (37 miles) east or a 30-minute train ride away. A day of highlights might include the Anne Frankhuis, a canal cruise, the Van Gogh Museum, the Red-Light District, a stroll around the leafy Jordaan area and a drink or two in its gezellig (cosy) traditional brown cafes. There are tourist information offices in and next to the railway station at Platform 2B and just outside at Stationsplein 10 (tel: (205) 512 525; website: www.holland.com/amsterdam/gb).
