Excursions
Chiang Mai
The countryside surrounding Chiang Mai is dotted with day-trip options. The scenic Mae Sa Valley, with its elephant camp (office in Chiang Mai at 119/9 Thanon Tha Pae, tel: (053) 206 248) and botanic gardens is often visited. To escape the crowds head to the rural ruins at Wiang Kum Kam, which feel largely unexplored. However, Doi Suthep Mountain and its eagle-eyrie temple make the most popular excursion. Located 16km (10 miles) northwest of Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep stands at 1,676m (5,499ft). Here, perched at the top of a 300-step, naga-lined staircase, or short funicular ride, is the north's most sacred temple, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (website: www.doisuthep.com). Established in 1383, the cloisters, built in fine Lanna style, and dazzling gold-plated chedi boast fine views over the surrounding countryside.
